The Kedarnath Yatra is a pilgrimage journey to the sacred Kedarnath Temple, located in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the Chota Char Dham, which refers to the four holy shrines in the Himalayas, and holds immense religious significance for Hindus.
Distance and Route: Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, is situated approximately 1,175 kilometers (730 miles) away from Kedarnath. The most common route for the Kedarnath Yatra from Bhopal involves traveling by road.
Mode of Travel: Bhopal does not have direct connectivity to Kedarnath via air or train. Therefore, the most practical option is to travel by road. You can either hire a private vehicle or take a bus from Bhopal to reach Kedarnath. The journey usually takes around 24-30 hours, depending on the traffic and road conditions.
Base Camp: The town of Gaurikund serves as the base camp for the Kedarnath Yatra. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,982 meters (6,503 feet) above sea level. From Gaurikund, the trek to Kedarnath Temple begins.
Trek to Kedarnath: The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath covers a distance of about 16 kilometers (10 miles). It is a moderately challenging trek, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. Ponies, palanquins, and helicopter services are available for those who prefer not to trek the entire distance.
Kedarnath Temple: The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (divine representations of Lord Shiva) and holds great religious significance for Hindus. The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 8th century AD and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Weather and Best Time to Visit: The weather in Kedarnath is mostly cold throughout the year due to its high altitude. The best time to undertake the Kedarnath Yatra is during the summer months from May to June and September to October when the weather is relatively mild and favorable for trekking. The temple remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
Accommodation and Facilities: Gaurikund and nearby areas provide accommodation options such as guesthouses, hotels, and dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses). Basic amenities like food, water, and medical facilities are available along the trekking route. It is advisable to carry sufficient warm clothing, trekking gear, and necessary supplies.
